My Story

5 years ago this week my wife Zoe was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 34. The following weeks she attended many hospital visits and underwent surgery where the tumour was successfully removed. A treatment plan was established at one of the many hospital visits and she was told that she would undergo a course of radio and chemotherapy.

At the hospital Zoe was given a small box with the words Little Lifts on the side. She opened it a cried for the first time since she was originally diagnosed. The box was full of “carefully curated items specifically choose to alleviate the symptoms of chemotherapy and radiotherapy”. I think it was at that point she realised that she wouldn’t be on her own and there was a whole world of care and support for her.

During those uncertain times both me and Zoe tried to remain strong and up-beat. However, after receiving the Little Lift box I think we both realized how important external charitable support was to compliment the treatment. Getting through the emotional side of cancer can be just as tough.

Four years later and she is a trustee of the Little Lifts charity which has become part of our lives.

So, on this 5th anniversary I have decided to get on a one-way plane ticket to Switzerland. I’m pretty sure Zoe has just assumed I’ve quietly booked myself in at Dignitas but what she doesn’t know is that I’ve taken my bike with me and I’m going to cycle home to surprise her.

Ill be following the Rhine River through The Swiss Alps, into Germany, Austria,  Liechtenstein, France and then the Netherland, followed by a short ferry crossing then cycling back into Suffolk on Sunday 16th June.  Roughly 900miles in in 16 days. I’m doing the trip solo and unsupported and will be carrying all my own camping equipment. This will be the hardest ride I’ve ever attempted.

I’ve decided to try and raise £1000 for the Little Lifts charity that has helped Zoe and many other like her.

Ill be grateful for any donations received. The following week I will be sparking up the Pizza oven for a celebration pizza night. All doners welcome.

Thank you.
